Viva Magenta! Pantone's Colour of the Year - What fabrics to pick and where to put them

"This year’s Color of the Year is powerful and empowering. It is a new animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying, and a boundaryless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement. PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta welcomes anyone and everyone with the same verve for life and rebellious spirit. It is a color that is audacious, full of wit and inclusive of all."

Following the warm blue vibe of 2022's "Very Peri" and 2020's "Ultimate Grey", this year's Pantone colour of the year feels like the colour we need in 2023. Blasting away the cobwebs with such a bold tone gives us a taste of Summer vibrancy and the hope of better things, especially given what a challenging start to the year we've already had.

Here I'll be picking out some of the fabrics we have available to make up into bench cushions and chair seat pads as well as roman blinds and curtains. All fantastic vehicles to bring some radiant colour into our living spaces. As well as what colours to match with magenta and what rooms could suit it best.

If you're the kind of person who's willing to go all in, showing off the energy of magenta in a patterned fabric is a great way to go. It also offers a great opportunity to pick out complementary colours to mix and match in the rest of a room.

Linwood have a couple of great patterns to start off with - the magenta colourway of their Omega Prints II - Genie (top) has some equally thrilling blues and oranges to pick out for a matching blind or lamp shade in the room. This soft velvet fabric as a whole is muted somewhat with beiges and wine reds to give a fabric that packs a punch, but sneakily.

If you're more of a check fan, their Beachcomber in Rubha (bottom) is a great choice. In this 100% wool fabric, the magenta stripes are blended beautifully with blues, green and yellows to give a sophisticated touch of colour to a room. Given the softened colours matched with the flashy pink in this fabric, it would sit nicely as a cushion amongst earthy greens and browns - perfect for a boot room or lounge room featuring leathers and other tweeds.

For fabrics which are more to the point with their colouring, Modelli Fabrics offer a great selection of plain fabrics which show off their Viva Magenta feathers fully. Perfect for when you need a really strong pop of colour!

The Zaza in Bubblegum Pink (top) is a linen look flat weave fabric which is machine washable fabric with a very subtle woven texture. This would work well as a roman blind or curtains as well as a long lasting bench cushion.

Next up is the Maestro in the marvellously named colourway Drama Queen (middle). It's another machine washable, upholstery friendly fabric, this time as a cotton look velvet that won't mark or bruise.

And our last contender in the plains category is the Lusso in Hot Fuschia (bottom). A truly stunning heavy crushed velvet which will catch the light at all angles.

If you're looking to accent with other colours in your room, greens sit at the opposite side of the colour wheel and matched with such a vibrant pink as magenta, would bring to mind bright summer gardens in flower. Golds and greeny blues would also be a safe bet. If you were looking to tone things down a little, darker blues would be a good fit.

Given the in your face nature of magenta, whatever you have in this colour in your room is going to be a show stealer. It can work really well as a feature piece in a lounge room with dark blue walls - perfect for a roman blind. Or a lively bedroom which gives you that get up and go from the moment you wake. In a garden room magenta soft furnishings would remind you of the warmth of summer when it's decidedly cold outside, or completent the lush greens of the warmer weather.

So what are you waiting for, bring some joy to your rooms and pick a Viva Magenta fabric for your next seating cushion, roman blind or curtains. If you'd like a quote featuring any of the mentioned fabrics (or something less bright, we can work with that too), please do send us a message using our Contact Us page.
